As a long-time resident of Greater Sudbury living Downtown, Derek embraces his Scottish heritage, acknowledges the stark realities of Downtown Sudbury while staying optimistic and hopeful that change can happen with teamwork.
Years of Community Building Experience
Over the last 20+ years Derek has developed his entrepreneurial skills and experience in the private and non-profit sector. He`s been a self-employed producer in the entertainment industry (IATSE 634, Little Ray’s Nature Centre, Dr. Von Houligan, Knights of Valour, and the President’s Choice SuperDogs) and worked as operations manager of the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre.

Politically, Derek first ran for City Council in 2006 and in 2010 finished fourth in the mayor’s race. His continuous interest and vision in municipal politics has made him a community leader. He was a Director & Marketing Chair for the Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Association, President for the Sudbury Arts Council, and served on boards for Theatre Cambrian and Sudbury Indie Cinema.

I'm politically motivated and actively engaged in my community. I ran my first campaign in 2006, and over 20 years of campaign experience and building community have prepared me for this opportunity. I feel more prepared now than I ever have been.
I believe that we can only create a place we're proud of by following the current roadmap to end homelessness with a Housing First strategy and making adjustments as we go.
Homelessness must be dealt with using a compassionate, dignified, holistic approach, and a complete overhaul is not required to make the Net-Zero goal possible. The 247 crosses at Paris and Brady St. represent the lives lost and families torn apart by a failed system. We must understand their trauma and address the root cause of homelessness and addictions.
We need immediate, short-term, and long-term actionable items developed at the grassroots level and supported by all levels of government. We need impartial, balanced, compassionate and principled leadership because the homelessness issue affects everyone in our community, including business owners, visitors, residents, first responders, outreach teams, service providers, and even those accessing the services.
Enforcement should only be considered as a last resort, once the proper supports of crisis intervention, day programs, detox, safe injection sites, public bathrooms, employment and life skills programs are in place.
Authenticity is most important to me. I also value honesty, informed decision-making, supporting the community and making decisions in the interest of all residents rather than personal benefit.
I think it's important to attend community events, engage grassroots organizations and support community-led projects. Above all else, I plan to maintain an open dialogue, returning phone calls/emails and regularly visiting the ward to listen when possible.
I love the Sudbury story and its people. No matter where you go in the world, you will always meet someone from Sudbury who has a personal connection to share. Some of us may want to leave the City, but our heart keeps us here. My dad met his bride of 49 years in Sudbury and has been here ever since his first day on the job at City Hall as a Pinkertons Security Branch Office Manager.
Good Monday Morning from Ward 10!! It's a good Monday morning because I get to share the story of Sudbury resident Tracey Whalen and her experience as a graduate of the Teen Challenge Canada program. Her incredible story is one of courage and strength, as she went through the national faith-based recovery program. After graduating in 2011, she shares this powerful message:"You are not a lost cause. Society might think you're a lost cause, and you might think you're a lost cause... But nobody is truly hopeless." Leanne Watson, the coordinator of the Teen Challenge Sudbury, believes that solutions are already here in our community, we just need to promote & support them!I agree with her. It's achievable with affordable housing, a more compassionate action plan, tougher enforcement on open drug use and programs promoting meaningful employment & life skills. We need realistic & long-term solutions that improve prosperity for all, protect Sudbury and create a place we're proud to call home. The Samaritan Centre hosted a faith-based luncheon in Sudbury's Mem... Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of Jack Layton's passing. I rewatched Jack last night which was his biography. As a Toronto city councillor in 1985, Jack championed the AIDS crisis when people were dying in the streets and voters were apathetic towards using tax dollars to stop the crisis. Later in his career, Jack ran for Mayor in 2001 and proudly championed affordable housing.I was fortunate to meet Jack on a few occasions during his trips to the North. His story really resonated with me, and the progress he made for Canada was incredible. History matters, and learning from our past is how we move forward!Fast forward to 2026, and we are still dealing with similar issues. Affordable housing is still an issue in Sudbury, and I'm happy to see that I'm only one of many election candidates trying to end the crisis of drugs and homelessness.If we can turn a city of black rock into a landscape of trees, it's possible to use lessons from the past and move forward together to a more vibrant Sudbury!

Today is the day… Nominations have now closed for the 2026 Municipal Elections. This is when things kick into high gear, and the hard work of the campaign really begins. Over these last 82 days, my team and I attended a lot of events to hear what issues matter to people in the Ward. My first event was the No Shame No Blame Community Impact forum, and it only grew from there: music festivals, charity events, the Memorial Park Grand Reopening, and multiple activities surrounding Bell Park historical celebrations became weekly things on my calendar. Learning about homelessness and possible solutions has been an important goal this summer. I was proud to volunteer for YES Theatre’s City Medicine play and participated in a sharing circle/smudging ceremony at one of Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre`s weekly outreach events at the Elgin Street Mission. Beyond that, there have been countless meetings with people working in the system to understand where the gaps are, and what potential solutions exist.I bring over 20 years of dedicated community and campaign experience. Sudbury has many resources and reports available to us as a city, and it`s a matter of funding and using them properly. We have what we need with the Road Map to End Homelessness, Downtown Master Plan, Community and Emergency Services Committee, OADA Compliance, and our city budget. For my campaign, you'll begin seeing more of Plan 180, a collection of policies that I will set in motion or launch within the first half of the year once elected. My team & I created these policies with purpose, using research and community input to address city problems with new ideas & long-term solutions.If Sudbury can successfully plant 10 million trees on scorched black rocks, I believe that we can tackle these serious issues.
