General Questions You May Have
A Quick Q&A About Voting

Can Temporary or Permanent Residents Vote?

Unfortunately, only Canadian citizens can vote in elections, whether municipal, provincial, or federal.

Can I Vote As A College of University Student In Sudbury??

Yes! There is a special rule for students who may be living away from home while they attend school. As a student, you can vote in both your “home” municipality and in Sudbury.  Just bring your ID and proof of address in Greater Sudbury, and you can help choose the next mayor and city council.

What If I Have a Disability Or Problems with Accessibility?

The online voting system is AODA and WCAG2.2 compliant, and it offers the following features:

  • Screen readers, keyboard navigation, and text magnification
  • VoiceOver and TalkBack on mobile devices
  • Multiple languages on the ballot, including English and French
  • Accessible video tutorials and plain language instructions
  • In Sudbury, you can choose the Voting Location that is most convenient for you.

Proxy voting is also an option.  If you are unable to attend a voting location in person, you have the option of appointing a Proxy to vote on your behalf. Paperwork for this process is available on the Ontario.ca website, and a municipal clerk must sign the forms before voting.  A person may be a proxy for an unlimited number of family members, but it is only once for a non-family member
